A Collection of Ideas...A Tribute to Howard Zinn

Program Update: Howard Zinn was due to speak at SMMoA about his new documentary, The People Speak. Following Zinn’s death on Wednesday, January 27, the event has become a tribute to this remarkable man and his work.

Thursday, February 4, 8 pm
A Collection of Ideas: A Tribute to Howard Zinn

Selected clips from Howard Zinn’s new documentary, The People Speak, with special guests Peter Sellars and Dolores Huerta.

Using dramatic and musical performances of diaries, letters, and speeches by everyday Americans, The People Speak gives voice to those who valiantly spoke up for social change throughout United States history. Produced by Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Chris Moore, Anthony Arnove, and Zinn, The People Speak illustrates the magnitude of these passionate historical moments and reminds us never to take liberty for granted.

Renowned theater, opera, and festival director, Peter Sellars is known internationally for providing original perspectives on contemporary social and political issues through his groundbreaking interpretations of classic works. Sellars is a professor in the department of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA and was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dolores Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers Union (UFW) in 1962 with Cesar Chavez. She is President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, whose mission is to inspire and motivate people to organize sustainable communities. Huerta serves on the boards of the Feminist Majority and People for the American Way.

A stand-by line will open at 7pm; seating is not guaranteed. Admission $25; $10 SMMoA members.

Proceeds from tonight’s event will support educational initiatives of The People Speak to bring the film and its message, “Democracy is not a spectator sport”, into schools across the country. For more information and to get involved, visit and related efforts at The People Speak’s sister organization, Voices of a People’s History
