A hybrid musical-lecture with Mexican DJ/producer Toy Selectah, and cultural polymath Josh Kun. This event pays tribute to the work of sonideros – mobile Mexican DJs – who crossfade, mix, and amplify the views and voices of Latinos. Listen as Toy Selectah mixes this musical performance to the stories of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network as well as members of the audience who are invited to deliver messages.

About Toy Selectah
Toy Selectah is the DJ behind trailblazing Monterrey, Mexico hip hop crew Control Machete. He has pioneered a new sound in Spanish-language music – a mix of contemporary urban rhythms with Mexican Norteño and Cumbia music. Since the late 90’s he has worked with numerous artists, groups, and friends within the music scene of Latin America and the U.S. including Calle 13, Diplo, Gustavo Cerati, Celso Piña, Manu Chao, and Molotov. He currently runs A&R and the creative direction of SONES DEL MEXSIDE (the record label he founded in 2000). He also collaborates on creative direction for labels from the Universal Music group. Most recently, Toy Selectah discovered and produced 3Ball MTY, the global Mex-tronic sensation that put the electronic “tribal” sound on the top of the Latin and club charts. He remains one of the most sought-after remixers and producers in contemporary Latin music.

About Josh Kun
A writer, curator, and professor in the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, Josh Kun studies music as a form of cultural connection and social action. He is the Director of the Popular Music Project at The Norman Lear Center, and has been a contributing writer for The New York TimesLos Angeles Times, LA Weekly, The American Prospect, Los Angeles magazine, among others. He curated Trouble in Paradise: Music and Los Angeles 1945-1975 for the Grammy Museum as part of Pacific Standard Time. He is the author of Audiotopia (2005) and co-author of And You Shall Know Us By The Trail of Our Vinyl (2008), and recently co-edited Tijuana Dreaming: Life and Art at the Global Border (2012).

A Collection of Ideas… is a series of conversations with some of today’s most innovative and creative minds to examine the important social, cultural, and political issues of our time.
