Wood engraving by Edward Whymper, page 117 of Scrambles Amongst the Alps

Contemporary artist and avid skier Ephraim Puusemp leads a discussion about Edward Whymper’s mountaineering classic, originally published in 1871. In Scrambles Amongst the Alps a young Englishman makes history after a series of failed and disastrous attempts to summit the Matterhorn. Accompanied by a slideshow of Whymper’s stunning engravings, this book club meeting will examine Scrambles as an extraordinary and timeless travelogue that continues to resonate with contemporary climbers and non-climbers alike.
