Puppet Show
The Snowflake Man is a puppet show and workshop with award-winning puppeteer Sarah Frechette. The Snowflake Man combines art, science, and some little known American history in its main character: Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley, a farmer and self-educated scientist who became the first person to capture a single snowflake on film. Bentley’s story is set inside SMMoA’s exhibition, Yutaka Sone and Benjamin Weissman: What Every Snowflake Knows in Its Heart, and brought to life with intricate Czech-style marionettes and pop-up paper scenery.

Sarah Frechette is an artist and graduate of the University of Connecticut’s Puppet Arts program. She is touring The Snowflake Man, a UNIMA-USA award-winning production, with support from the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Frechette inherited an interest in Wilson Bentley: “When my grandfather was a young boy he purchased three snowflake photos from Snowflake Bentley. His pride in his photos inspired my idea for this show and at the heart of it is a love letter from me to my late grandfather. Behind all of the shows I create is the memory of my Vermont heritage, my grandparents, and relatives who work with their hands and with their hearts.”

Bring your own snowy story to life in this fun family workshop. Using simple art materials, participants will learn how to create their own paper puppets and table-top scenery inspired by the colorful pop-up book art of “The Snowflake Man.” Award-winning puppeteer and artist Sarah Frechette, a graduate of the University of Connecticut’s Puppet Arts program, will provide guidance and answer puppetry-related questions throughout.
